Canoe slalom athletes to race for Junior World Team selection on
Kananaskis River OTTAWA, ON - Junior canoe slalom athletes seeking selection to the
Junior World Championships team will race off at Canoe Meadows on the

junior athletes Jazmyne Denhollander of Chilliwack, BC and Liam Smedley
of Ottawa, ON posted results that qualified them for the under 23 team
and were pre-selected to the junior team based on their medal
performances at the 2011 National Championships.

ICF press Release: Duisburg next on the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup Circuit (23.05.2012)

Media Release

Duisburg next on the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup Circuit

Hungarian team, Attila Vajda, Natasa Janics to begin season campaign in Duisburg

Lausanne, Switzerland May 23, 2012 - After concluding a first World Cup that was filled with excitement and anxiety, Canoe Sprint paddlers are now headed to Duisburg, Germany where the second World Cup of the season will be held from 25-27 May. More than 400 paddlers from 57 countries will be competing on the well established Wedau Regatta Course in Sportpark, Duisburg.

While the last opportunity to win additional places at this summer's Olympic Games was at the European Olympic Qualifiers in Poznan last week, some National Federations are yet to put a name to the boat and this exercise will continue in Duisburg this weekend. Hot in the mix of Olympic team selections are Great Britain's Tim Brabants and Paul Wycherley who are locked in an on-going battle for the single Men's K1 1000m Olympic place which is up for grabs. Brabants had won Team GB's opening regatta in Nottingham last month but finished in fourth place in Poznan last weekend in a tough semi-final draw that took him to the Final B of the event. Wycherley on the other hand finished second in his semi final and went on to race in the final A, leveling them on points. The agony of Olympic selection for both athletes will be decided in Duisburg this weekend.

John Anderson, GB performance director, said, "Paul paddled well to make the final, so the battle between Tim and Paul will now continue to Duisburg next weekend, which will undoubtedly make for an exciting climax to selection."

Brabants commented, "I was in the toughest of the four semis, with a changing head wind playing havoc with the finish times, but I didn't race so well this time."

"But I had a good B final, even though strong head winds made for slow times. I'm feeling better every time I race and will just have to make it happen in Duisburg this week."

For paddlers that have already been selected to their Olympic team, the World Cups particularly the first one, tends to be used as a "warm up exercise" for the season, it is also an event where paddlers can gauge who their competition could be at the Olympic Games. South Africa's Bridgitte Hartley who carries realistic medal hopes for her country and continent at the Olympic Games, said from Duisburg, "Weather conditions here are better than they were in Poznan, not so many paddlers have arrived yet but I am looking forward to the competition as everyone has now warmed up."

"Doing so well in the A final last weekend has really spurred me on to do well in Duisburg."

Revving up the competition this weekend will be the Hungarian team who were not present at last week's competition because of national selection trials. Current Men's C1 1000m world champion Attila Vajda begins his season campaign competing in both the 1000m and 200m distances, he will be facing tough challenges from local hero Sebastian Brendel in the 1000m and the surprise winner of the 200m Andrei Kraytor (AZE) - who last weekend shocked the favourite to win Ivan Shtyl (RUS). Back in action after a season away is Natasa Janics (HUN). She will be competing in the K1 200m, an event she has medalled in dozens of time already. Janics will also be pairing up with her longtime partner Katalin Kovaks in the K2 500m but competition in the K2 500m will be plentiful as the duo will have to outperform their teammates Gabriella Szabor and Tamara Csipes and Poznan World Cup race winner Franziska Weber and Tina Dietza (GER) if they are to reclaim their status as the boat to beat anywhere and everywhere. Not to be counted out of the showdown is the Austrian duo of Yvonne Schuring and Viktoria Schwartz. The current world champions did not medal in any of the distances they raced last weekend, but with their 500m world title in hand they will be looking to make a statement of intent ahead of the Olympic Games.

Duisburg has hosted many Canoe Sprint competitions but this event in particular is of great importance because it is held in an Olympic year and keen eyes will be drawn to the competition as the race to London 2012 continues. The competition this weekend will be broadcast by ESPN (USA), Canal Plus (France) and SPORTSNET (Canada) amongst others. Please note that you can also watch the World Cup live this week end on the ICF video website: http:// http://eurovision.digotel.com/icf/index.html . Gauthier captures gold at Paracanoe World Championships

Gauthier captures gold at Paracanoe World Championships

OTTAWA, ON - All three of Canada's Paracanoe athletes made it to the
podium at the Paracanoe World Championships in Poznan, Poland today as
the team captured medals across four events.

Christine Gauthier of Pointe-Claire, QC lead the field by winning gold
in the Women's K1 200 metre LTA event for a second consecutive year.
Gauthier first won the title of World Champion in the same event last
August and prevailed again today in windy conditions by winning the race
in a time of 57.7 seconds. She won by a margin of over three seconds
with the second place competitor from Spain finishing at 1:01.1 and the
third place Romanian at 1:03.0.

Teammate Christine Selinger of Regina, SK won medals in two events,
including a silver medal in the Women's V1 200 metre in the TA/A
category and a bronze in the Women's V1 LTA. The V1 uses a modified
outrigger boat paddled with a single canoe blade. Paracanoe athletes are
classified for events based on the mobility they have in their legs,
trunk and arms.

Dave Waters of Dartmouth, NS won his first medal at Worlds with a third
place finish in the Men's V1 200 metre in the TA class. Waters finished
in a time of 1:02.4 and was 3.4 seconds off the winner from Great
Britain.

Gauthier, Selinger and Waters all qualified to compete at the World
Championships at National Trials in Burnaby, BC last month. While all
three have competed at World Championships in previous years, this
year's Championships required athletes to be ready to compete several
months earlier than usual due to the timing of the Olympic Games.
Paracanoe will make its debut on the programme at the 2016 Paralympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The action continues from Poznan, Poland tomorrow as the first Sprint
World Cup gets underway with heats and semi-finals on Friday. Finals and
200 metre events will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Cheema War Canoe Olympic Bound

Cheema War Canoe Launch

We had a really great event on Saturday to launch the Cheema war canoe. We had an attendance of about
75 including an MP, MLA and Councillor and media coverage was really good. We even made the front page of the Chronicle Herald. Check it out, attached photo and article here http://thechronicleherald.ca/sports/95845-paddlers-have-olympics-in-sight

The event was also covered on television by CTV and Global News. Canadian Press and the Globe & Mail also came out to get some national coverage. We also had a few community papers as well. This profile comes during an ideal time for club registration season and also helps our Canadian Canoe goals and supports the crew. Special thanks to everyone who helped with this, especially Dean Millar at Cheema who took care of logistics. Also thanks to Peter Giles, Julia Rivard, Rick Fair, Frank Garner, Yvette Hughes, Jon Pike and Robert Fraser who all attended and spoke very nicely. Here are a few of the articles below. I have also posted some photos from the event on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?

CanoeKayak Canada selects 26 athlete team to compete at World Cups

CanoeKayak Canada selects 26 athlete team to compete at World Cups

OTTAWA, ON - CanadaKayak Canada will take 26 athletes to compete at World Cups in Poznan, Poland from May 18 to 20 and Duisburg, Germany from May 25-27. The team was selected based on results at Sprint Team Trials held in Lake Lanier, Georgia from May 4 to 6. The athletes will head overseas on Thursday.

World Cups will be used as part of the selection process for the Canadian Olympic Team. Canada has qualified boats for five sprint events at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Adam van Koeverden has already guaranteed himself the Men's K1 1000 metre spot with a win at Sprint Team Trials last Friday. Van Koeverden may also race a third World Cup in Moscow from June 1 to 3. He says World Cups are all about getting ready to produce his best result in London.

"Those races are important for me - just more indications of what I should work on for the final eight or seven weeks of preparation before London" van Koeverden said after his race at trials on Friday. "I've had a lot of successes at World Cups over the years but really I'm just focused on London."

In Men's C1 1000 and C1 200, the Olympic entry has been narrowed down between two athletes. Mark Oldershaw and Ben Russell will compete for the top Canadian result in the 1000, and Aaron Rublee and Jason McCoombs will do the same in the 200. As winners at Sprint Team Trials, Oldershaw and Rublee need to place better than their opponent at one of two World Cup races to secure their spot for London while the others need to be the top Canadian in both races.

In Men's K2, Canada has one Olympic entry. Crews will race to prove their medal potential in their respective events, the K2 200m and the K2 1000m, before the final selection is made.

Two crews already have one win each, Richard Dober Jr. and Steven Jorens in the K2 1000 metre, and Ryan Cochrane and Hugues Fournel in the 200 metre event. Philippe Duchesneau and Brady Reardon will be challengers in the K2 1000 and Connor Taras and Austin Denman will challenge in the K2 200. Both crews placed second at Sprint Team Trials and could be considered for Olympic selection if they place as the top Canadian crew at both World Cups.

"We're going to Europe to give it our best and have our best races," said Jorens. "With all of the training and preparations we've done, we're feeling confident going into this."

Rhys Hill of Ottawa will race the K1 200 metre events at World Cups. The Men's K1 200 metre entry will be selected at the second set of Sprint Team Trials in Montréal from June 22 to 24. CanoeKayak Canada's final nominations to the Canadian Olympic Committee will be officially announced after the trials in June.

Émilie Fournel, Kathleen (KC) Fraser and Geneviève Beauchesne-Sévigny will race in Women's K1 events in Europe. In Women's K4, Nicole Brown, Lissa Bissonnette, Michelle Russell and Alexa Irvin were named to the World Cup team. The crew will use the international race experience to prepare for the Under 23 World Championships being hosted on home water in Welland, Ontario from August 1 to 4, 2013.

Richmond Hill's Roland Varga and Paul Bryant will race C2 again this year at World Cups and are already focused on developing their race plan and medal potential for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Laurence Vincent-Lapointe and Mallorie Nicholson will race in Women's C1 and C2 events. Both are World Champions and with no World Championships taking place during the Olympic year, they will strive to defend their titles at World Cups.

Zone 6 BC Summer Games Selection Trials - Canoe/Kayak

It was a beautiful, sunny day at Long Lake with incredible efforts made
by Island athletes from the Victoria Youth Paddling Club (VYPC) and the
Nanaimo Canoe & Kayak Club (NCKC). Seventeen paddlers were competing
for eight spots on the Zone 6 Canoe-Kayak Team for the 2012 BC Summer
Games in Surrey this July today (May 5).

The Selection Trials involved three 1000m race distance events in single
kayak - K1, single canoe - C1, outrigger canoe - OC1, and a timed slalom
kayak course. Female athletes raced in direct finals for each, while
the men raced timed heats to accumulate their overall point total.

Veteran slalom coach, Tim Marks and his daughter & past competitor, Cara
Marks from Victoria attended to provide leadership for the Slalom Kayak
event. Many parents and volunteers officiated for the first time and
did an awesome job! The Island paddling community looks strong this
year.

One of the highlights locally was Jade Minor's (Nanaimo) results
standing as the top point accumulator with a total of 78 out of 80
points won with his strong performances in the K1, C1, and Slalom kayak
events. He was second to Victoria's Patrick Linden in the OC1 event.
Meanwhile in the women's events, Isobel Glover (Victoria) and Danielle
Caron (Nanaimo) switched positions a few times with Isobel placing 1st
in each of her races and took a 3rd place finish in C1 and Danielle
finished a strong first in C1 and a close second behind Isobel in each
of her other races.

More than a couple of athletes were disappointed in their slalom kayak
event when they missed a turn or capsized which resulted in a
disqualification. Fortunately for a couple of athletes they still had a
second run to collect a time for their performance to add to their
points tally, but it was unfortunate for one athlete that neither one
worked in her favour. Ayla Mark was the first athlete up to run through
the slalom kayak course and although she gave a decent showing with both
of her times, in both runs, she reversed a turn, which resulted in a
full disqualification - she therefore, didn't get to count either of her
performances into her final point score. As a result, it was difficult
to make significant headway even after two 3rd place finishes and a 4th
place finish in her other events. Ayla didn't let this get her down however, as she will still be eligible
for the BC Summer Games that will be hosted in Nanaimo in 2014. Many of
the younger athletes were participating to gain experience for future
team trials and upcoming regattas. The final 2012 Zone 6 Canoe-Kayak Team & points accumulated are as
follows: MALES

* Jade Minor - 78 (NCKC) * Patrick Linden - 62 (VYPC)
* Cameron Antifave - 60 (NCKC)
* Stephen Lucato - 48 (VYPC)
* Ulysse Antoine-Debelic - 46 (NCKC) - Alternate
* Jeremy Morris - 36 (NCKC) - Alternate

FEMALES

* Isobel Glover - 76 (VYPC)
* Danielle Caron - 74 (NCKC) * Mackenzie Read - 58 (VYPC) * Ianna Folkes - 52 (NCKC)
* Nicole Darlington - 46 (NCKC) - Alternate
* Ayla Mark - 44 (NCKC) - Alternate
